The Secretary-General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Mohamed Sanusi Barkindo, said attacking the petroleum products distribution terminal north of Jeddah is a terrorist act.
He said in a statement issued today: "Such disruptive acts have very harmful effects on the security of energy supplies, for producers and consumers, and they also lead to increased volatility and turbulence in markets."
"We are pleased that the firefighting units were able to put out the fire quickly, so there were no injuries or loss of life. This rapid response, and the fact that Saudi Aramco's supplies of fuel to its customers were not affected, mean that the impact of this criminal act on the markets will be limited," Barkindo added.
He indicated that this criminal act comes after another recent attack on a floating platform at a station to unload petroleum products in Jizan, and another terrorist act, which took place in September of 2019, on oil facilities in Abqaiq-Khurais, both of which were aimed at cutting off energy supplies, and destabilize the global oil markets and the global economy.
Sanusi stressed that the organization stands firmly against all terrorist and sabotage acts, and strongly supports the stability of the oil market and the continued supply of all customers all around the world.
